Teen Bereavement Group - Connecting through Yoga

DATE: 2/12/2012  TIME: 2:00 PM

The Yoga Support Program, Connecting Through Yoga, is Expanding to Provide a Group for TEENS this Fall

Beginning in January 2010 the bereavement support program, Connecting Through Yoga, began providing for adults (over the age a 18) a place to come together in a safe and nurturing environment to safely explore some of the complicated emotions surrounding the death of a loved one. The program’s creator and facilitator, Nancy Perlson, is pleased to announce that beginning in November 2011, the program expands to include a GROUP FOR TEENS (Grades 9-12).

Whether a child has experienced the loss of a parent, sibling, friend, or other relative, like adults, children and adolescent grief follows a similar path. With feelings of isolation, disorientation, and disconnection from their daily lives, children struggle to find calm and balance in their overturned worlds. The yoga bereavement program geared towards high school age students will be similar to the regular 6-week adult program, but will be more focused on issues relating to teen’s experience with loss. Still using the ancient and beautiful practice of yoga, this group uses the same principles to create a supportive and safe environment in which to explore the feelings around the loss and connect with other peers on a similar path.

The first teen group will meet:

·      Sunday, January 22, 29, February 5, and 12

·      2:00pm – 3:30pm weekly

·      Program fee $140

Registration is required to participate in the program.  Please contact Nancy Perlson at nbperl@aol.com or 847.445.3388

Grief can have a profound effect on the body, mind, and spirit causing us to feel fragmented and isolated.

Using gentle asana(physical poses), pranyama (breath), and meditation, begin to heal the mind-body connection in a supportive and nurturing group environment.

While grief follows a different path for each individual, you are not alone. Be a part of a special sangha (community) of fellow travelers navigating their way through the difficult journey of grief after the death of a loved one.

Leap Day!!!

time:  8 - 9:30 am.

In Myths of the Asanas, the gods and goddesses in the myths displayed human flaws, making them easy to relate to. However, there was always a redemptive quality within them that eventually enabled them to forge qualities of forgiveness, strength, courage and brilliance. Similar to what we love in contemporary stories of redemption, from our rock stars and politicos undergoing moral change and deliverance, we too love a story of traveling from poverty, illness and bad behavior to states of moral recovery, compassion and awareness.

Siddhartha V. Shah is an art historian, lecturer, and yoga practitioner who specializes in the function of sacred art in spiritual practice. Born and raised in the West, he brings a fresh perspective to Hindu/Yoga philosophy that is easily accessible to the Western seeker. He studied the history of art and classics at Johns Hopkins University and Psychology/Hindu Philosophy at the California Institute of Integral Studies, thus Siddhartha combines mythology, visual imagery, and psychology in his lectures, exhibitions, and classes.
